Frequently Asked Questions about Interlibrary Loan
What is Interlibrary Loan?
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a cooperative resource sharing service that allows library patrons to borrow materials from other library systems within the United States that are not owned by the NGTC Libraries.
All ILL materials are courtesy loans from lending institutions so they determine the availability, due date, lending period, renewal possibility, restrictions on use, loan fees and replacement costs for all borrowed items.
Who is eligible for Interlibrary Loan?
The ILL service is available for currently enrolled NGTC students, as well as faculty and staff. Library accounts must be in good standing. There is no fee for services; however, the ILL borrower’s agreement lists all the patron responsibilities assigned to the loan.
What can be borrowed?
We can attempt to borrow almost anything you need. Please submit a request form with as much information as possible, and we will try. If we cannot obtain the material, we will contact you.
What cannot be borrowed?
ILL requests for textbooks will not be filled. The Library views the purchase of textbooks as part of a student’s expected cost of pursuing a degree.
How do I make a request?
Submit your request via email or as a paper form request. Please submit a separate request for each item. A patron may make up to 5 requests at one time; this includes requests already submitted but that have yet to be completed.
Does ILL cost me anything?
In most cases, the Interlibrary Loan service is free. You are responsible for prompt payment of any overdue fines and/or replacement costs arising from your requests.
How long will my request take?
Please submit requests well in advance of deadlines. We cannot guarantee a specific arrival time. Delivery times vary. Most books arrive in 1 to 2 weeks. Some items take more than 2 weeks. Articles usually take only 1 to 3 days.
How will I know when my item arrives?
When an item is available, the ILL staff person will notify you through your NGTC email account and also place a call to the phone number you provided.
Where do I pick up my materials?
Interlibrary Loan materials can be picked up and returned to the NGTC library circulation desk at any of the three campuses. Articles and book chapters are delivered to you electronically via email.
How long can I borrow something?
The lending library specifies the length of the loan (usually 2 to 4 weeks), the conditions under which the material may be used and the possibility of renewals before the due date. Some libraries do not grant renewals, so prompt pick-up and use of materials is important. All borrowed material is subject to “recall” when a member of the lending institution needs it. If an item is recalled it is your responsibility to return it immediately. Failure to adhere to ILL rules may result in loss of borrowing privileges for the borrower as well as the NGTC Library.
